Remanufactured MICR Cartridges & Research

Reused or “remanufactured” cartridges are used toner cartridges, often marketed as MICR “compatible.” The cartridges are emptied, disassembled, cleaned, reassembled and refilled with a toner mix and marketed as MICR toner. These toner vendors are free to label their toner however they want, without being held to any performance standards or MICR verification.

It is impossible to achieve the quality, performance and verified yield of Source Technologies OEM MICR toners with a remanufactured MICR toner, even if that toner is labeled as compatible with Source Technologies MICR printers. The refill process is fraught with unpredictable factors and therefore presents the potential for inferior toner formulations. And when the toner is this bad, it won’t stand up to the check clearing process. Your company is now exposed to bank reject fees.

Remanufactured MICR toner cartridges usually produce yields far lower than advertised, so you are actually getting much less than you paid for.

If you do use a remanufactured MICR toner cartridge in a Source Technologies printer - even if that cartridge is labeled as compatible – the warranty on the printer is void. Remanufactured toner has been known to cause expensive or even irreparable damage to our printers.

MICR Remanufactured Cartridge Research

Source Technologies tested a variety of remanufactured MICR toner cartridges to discover what our customers are really getting when they use these products. Our MICR engineers tested the cartridges here at our facility. Together they have more than 100 years of experience engineering and developing MICR printers and MICR toner.

Here is what they found:
No standards. Since most suppliers of remanufactured MICR toner cartridges don’t adhere to any standards, you never know what you’re going to get.

  • The wrong cartridge for your printer model
  • Low MICR signal strength
  • Inconsistent toner coverage
  • Flaking off of the MICR line
  • Bank rejection fees

How used is it? Some remanufactures reuse a cartridge 5, 10, 15 times or more. Cartridges are not built for endless use. So it’s only a matter of time before you purchase a cartridge that just can’t perform any more.

You get what you pay for. Remanufacturers want you to think you’re getting a great deal. They advertise a low cost for a high-yield. They’re counting on you not keeping track of the yield you’re getting. So you’ll never know that the 21K cartridge you purchased only actually yields 12K. Your cost per page is virtually doubled.

The speed of doing business: Some remanufacturers warn against printing at speeds of greater than 25 pages per minute and suggest that you print for only 2 minutes at a time. Time is money. Make sure your toner cartridge can keep up with your speed of doing business.

No peace of mind. When you purchase a remanufactured or refilled MICR toner cartridge, you forfeit the quality assurance features that a Source Technologies secure MICR solution provides:

  • Low toner warning
  • MICR toner detection
  • MICR Guarantee
