Horace Mann is the largest national, multi-line insurance corporation focusing on the insurance and financial planning needs of the educational community. Located in Springfield, IL they offer retirement products, automobile, homeowner, group and life insurance to educators and their families.

Horace Mann operates 16 lines of business with various systems. In 2001, they decided to update their claims software from an AS/400 system to a client server solution. While the new system met most of their needs, it missed two very important pieces. It could not securely print checks, nor could it automate their data transfer system. Prior to their claims software upgrade, Horace Mann had been printing their checks centrally in a back-office operation and then sending the overnight to the remote offices, resulting in costly shipping charges. Horace Mann employees were also manually moving the data between their systems, spending valuable man hours.

As a provider of secure, distributed check printing solutions, Source Technologies offered a full enterprise disbursement solution: e-DocSecure, a highly secure web-based system that offers companies absolute end-to-end security for remote disbursement and data management.

e-DocSecure has the capability to send check requests from a remote office to corporate headquarters via the Internet. The authorized person approves requests and the encrypted files are sent to secure MICR laser printers in the remote offices. An authorized person can then print them, thereby expediting the process and eliminating courier fees. In addition to providing secure check printing, Source Technologies was able to use the end-of-day reporting capabilities in e-DocSecure to automate data transfer between Horace Mann's many back-office systems. e-DocSecure acts as middleware, making transfers automatic and saving valuable time previously wasted by manual transfers.
